Tartans Spend Time Supporting Afterschool Activities for Local Kids

Led by women’s tennis standout Katie Cecil, a number of Carnegie Mellon student-athletes spent time working with children in the community on October 18. Cecil and a group of teammates volunteered at Lights on Afterschool, a program hosted at the Heinz History Center.

Lights on Afterschool is a national day of recognition which celebrates the importance of afterschool programming. Cecil and her fellow Tartans spent three hours with children at the History Center, leading a number of different games for the participants.

“I think it was a nice addition to our involvement with local kids. Hopefully, it can kick-start a long-term relationship with the Pittsburgh Public Schools,” said football senior Liam McGrath, who chairs the community service committee for the Carnegie Mellon Student-Athlete Advisory Council. “Katie and the tennis players deserve credit for making SAAC’s involvement possible. I’m glad we were able to make an impact. It’s a good representation of what Carnegie Mellon Athletics is trying to do in the community.”

For her part, Cecil enjoyed every minute of working with the kids and would relish the opportunity to do it again.

“The event was a lot of fun!” Cecil said.
