Women's Tennis Volunteers at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

The Carnegie Mellon women’s tennis team participated in the university’s 1000plus Day of Service on Saturday, April 6, as the student-athletes took time out of their schedules to give back to the Pittsburgh community.

During the 2011-12 academic year, the tennis program spent time teaching tennis in the local community on available weekends. This year, the team elected to participate in “Love Your Library,” an initiative aimed at supporting the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

“We were looking to do something together and when the opportunity for 1000plus came and we found out we were in town and didn’t have a match, we jumped on it,” said senior Alex Tapak. “We found that volunteering as a team was a bonding and rewarding experience.”

The women’s tennis players spent much of their time wrapping gifts for regular library volunteers, who will receive the gifts as a token of gratitude for their service and contributions to the library.

1000plus is a Carnegie Mellon day of service that offers multiple volunteer sites throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. The goal of the initiative is to provide service opportunities for individuals, groups and alumni in the Carnegie Mellon community that allow them to have a personally relevant impact in the local area.
