Student Athletes Help Rise Against Hunger

On Saturday, various members of the student-athlete community joined forces with nearly 500 other volunteers at Rise Against Hunger in the Jared L. Cohon University Center’s Wiegand Gym to help end global hunger by 2030. In just two hours, the group packaged approximately 200,000 dehydrated meals for distribution around the world thank to partners, Kraft Heinz Foundation and Rise Against Hunger.

This past spring, the Carnegie Mellon University men’s soccer team had the pleasure of partnering with Justin Forzano and Pittsburgh Soccer in the Community to launch yet another successful community service project. Throughout the semester the team worked closely with Arsenal Middle School, one of the many local public schools in the area, helping run their youth soccer team’s practices once or twice a week, over the course of roughly six weeks. Six or seven of the varsity players not only helped run the practices but also participated and challenged the Arsenal students with some solid competition.

In what has become a spring tradition for Carnegie Mellon University and the Department of Athletics, the Western Spring Sectional competition of the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania took place on campus for the third consecutive year on Saturday, April 14. Nearly 500 athletes competed in basketball, swimming and track and field, with hopes of qualifying for the state competition.

The newly formed program which ran for eight weeks was hosted by the Hosanna House and was designed for boys and girls ages 6-10.
