Carnegie Mellon’s Chief of Police Tom Ogden Speaks to Rising Juniors About Their Roles as Leaders

The 2013-2014 Carnegie Mellon Athletics Leadership Symposium came to a close Monday evening when the department welcomed Carnegie Mellon Chief of Police Tom Ogden to speak to the rising juniors about their roles as leaders.

"You have something special to bring to the table and you are gifted," Ogden said. "You're at Carnegie Mellon and I think everyone in this room is very special."

Ogden, who came to Carnegie Mellon in 2008, previously served with the Mt. Lebanon Police Department from 1980-2008. Ogden held all five ranking positions within the agency and served as Mt. Lebanon's Chief of Police for the final 10 years of his tenure.

Following Chief Ogden's presentation, select Carnegie Mellon upperclassmen facilitated conversations with the rising juniors. The veteran student-athletes presented the sophomores with scenarios that might confront them as team leaders and brainstormed appropriate resolutions in an open discussion forum.

"Chief Ogden is a leader in every sense of the word. It was quite an opportunity for our future leaders to hear from an expert whose leadership has had such an impact on the Carnegie Mellon community," said Director of Athletics Josh Centor. "We believe that outstanding leadership is a critical component for winning teams. Even more importantly, it is critical for our everyday lives."
