Last Beam Installed on Cohon University Center Addition

The steel is done! A milestone was reached in the construction of the Cohon University Center expansion last week, as the final steel beam was placed atop the structure. Earlier in the month, students, staff, faculty and other community members were a part of the university’s history when they signed their names and messages on the beam.

The Cohon Center expansion, which is slated to be complete by the spring of 2016, started in October with modifications to the East Campus Garage.

The new facility will be transformative for the university community, as the inviting addition of 62,000 square feet will include a state-of-the-art fitness center, two exercise studios, a cycling studio, additional locker rooms, an improved equipment desk, a pool spectator balcony, and a new entrance and lobby. A new studio theater located just off of the lobby will serve a wide range of student groups, and a wide variety of smaller performances in a studio theater environment.

The addition creates a front door for the University on Forbes Avenue and establishes a street presence that reinforces the master plan goals. The addition is configured to establish a clear path from the East Campus Garage to the front door of the Cohon Center and further west to the rest of the campus. While complementary to the existing facility, the addition is designed to be a contemporary architectural piece, incorporating materials from the existing building palette.
