(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The 2015-16 school year closed with another semester of outstanding work in the classroom by Carnegie Mellon University’s student-athletes. A total of 80 student-athletes recorded a 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) for the spring semester, while 33 of them earned a 4.0 for the academic year.

All 18 varsity athletic programs achieved a 3.20 or better while football led the way with 17 perfect GPA’s. The women’s swimming and women’s tennis teams earned GPA’s above 3.60 while the women’s soccer team was just behind them with a 3.53 GPA. The men’s tennis team, which advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championships, earned a 3.59 GPA, and three athletes finished with 4.0s.

“It has been quite a year for our athletics program. Our student-athletes continue to demonstrate that they can compete at the highest level academically and athletically,” said Director of Athletics Josh Centor. “I am grateful for the way our student-athletes represent the university, both on and off the playing fields.”

On top of the semester success, nine upperclassmen maintained cumulative GPA’s of 4.0. The success was widespread among the colleges, as 33 students with 4.0s were enrolled in the College of Engineering (CIT), 15 in Dietrich College, 14 in the Mellon College of Science (MCS), 13 in the Tepper School of Business, three in the School of Computer Science (SCS), one in the College of Fine Arts (CFA) and one in the cross discipline program from the School of Humanities and Sciences.

More than 61 percent of the women’s tennis team achieved a 3.50 or better, while earning a national ranking as high as six during the spring season.
