Tartans Open New Student-Athlete Lounge

Tartans Open New Student-Athlete Lounge

The Carnegie Mellon University athletics department opened a new student-athlete lounge in Skibo Gymnasium on Friday, February 10th prior to home basketball games that evening against Brandeis University. As student-athletes gathered in the lounge for refreshments, Director of Athletics Josh Centor welcomed them to their new space.

“Over the years, student-athletes have said that they would love to have a lounge where they can get together. Thanks to the vision of our donors, we have been able to deliver on that ambition,” Centor said. “My sincere hope is that students will utilize the space to strengthen connections, support one another and build a greater sense of community at Carnegie Mellon.”

The student-athlete lounge is for the exclusive use of varsity student-athletes at Carnegie Mellon, and it is intended to serve as a space in which student-athletes can socialize, study and relax in comfort within the main athletic building. The lounge features two 70'' televisions with cable TV and connection ports for video game systems and video streaming devices. The lounge also has several couches and captain’s chairs, high-top tables with stools, multipurpose bench seating, a refrigerator, a wireless printer and a work table.

The department also installed a healthy vending machine in conjunction with this project so that student-athletes will have the opportunity to eat nutritious snacks while they are in the lounge, and following their workouts.

Funding for the lounge was provided through donor contributions to the Tartan Athletics Fund. The lounge will be open year-round for varsity student-athlete use at all times that Skibo Gymnasium is open.
