Four Named Athlete of the Week by ECAC

(DANBURY, Conn.) – Four Carnegie Mellon University athletes were honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) when the organization announced its weekly award winners this week. From women's swimming and diving freshman Jessica Chau (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood), from men's track and field senior Tommy Mansfield (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville Central) and freshman Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy), and from women's track and field senior Sarah Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Hampton).

Jessica Chau - South Women's Swimming and Diving Rookie of the Week

Freshman Jessica Chau won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:04.86 and placed third in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.44 on Saturday at home against Denison and Johns Hopkins a week after returning from the team’s training trip.

Tommy Mansfield - South Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week (Field Events)

Senior Tommy Mansfield of the Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team helped the Tartans top 12 other teams at the Carnegie Mellon Division III Invitational at SPIRE Institution in Geneva, Ohio, on Saturday, January 20 with a first-place showing in the pole vault. The senior cleared a school record height of 4.58 meters, which was 0.2 meters better than his previous school record mark of 4.56 meters, which he cleared last season at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships. His height currently ranks tops in the UAA and 18th nationally.

Marvin Bennett Jr. - South Men's Track and Field Rookie of the Week

Freshman Marvin Bennett of the Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team helped the Tartans top 12 other teams at the Carnegie Mellon Division III Invitational at SPIRE Institution in Geneva, Ohio, on Saturday, January 20. In his first collegiate meet, Bennett turned in first-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.08 and was part of the distance medley relay that placed second in 10:45.00. His time of 7.08 in the 60-meter dash was .03 seconds of the school record time and currently ranks tops in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

Sarah Cook - South Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week (Track Events)

Senior Sarah Cook of the Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team earned a pair of first-place finishes at the Carnegie Mellon Division III Invitational at SPIRE Institution in Geneva, Ohio, on Saturday, January 20. Cook won the 800-meter dash with a time of 2.18.95 seconds, which is 13th best in the nation to date and fourth in the University Athletic Association (UAA). She also ran a leg in the 4x400-meter relay that also placed first with a time of 4:06.79.
