Three Named Athlete of the Week by ECAC

(DANBURY, Conn.) – Three Carnegie Mellon University athletes were honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) when the organization announced its weekly award winners this week. Junior Debarati Bhanja (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) from women's track and field and senior Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and freshman Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) from men's track and field were the award winners.

Debarati Bhanja - South Women's Track and Field Runner of the Week

Junior Debarati Bhanja of the Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team helped the Tartans win their Annual Quad meet Saturday after recording four top finishes and a second-place finish. The junior highlighted the meet when she broke a 23-year old school record in the 100-meter dash after crossing in 12.48 seconds. Her time broke Vonquitra Bebee's record of 12.54 seconds set in 1995. Bhanja then won the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.15 and the long jump with a mark of 4.91 meters. Her fourth and final victory came as part of the 4x400 relay team that crossed in 4:06.24. She was also part of the 4x100 relay team that placed second. Her 100-meter time currently ranks second in the UAA and 28th nationally while her 200-meter times ranks third in the UAA.

Jacob Schofel - South Men's Track and Field - Field Athlete of the Week

Senior Jacob Schofel of the Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field helped the Tartans win their Annual Quad meet Saturday. Schofel turned in two top finishes in the discus and hammer throw while placing second in the shot put. The senior broke the school record in the discus with a mark of 47.55 meters. He broke James Hulley's mark of 47.40 meters set in 2010. Schofel won the hammer throw with a mark of 55.82 meters and took second in the shot put with a mark of 13.67 meters. He currently ranks top in the UAA in the hammer throw and discus while ranking seventh in the hammer and 11th in the discus nationally.

Bram Miller - South Men's Track and Field Rookie of the Week

Freshman Bram Miller of the Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field helped the Tartans win their Annual Quad meet Saturday. Miller claimed top honors in the shot put with a throw of 15.08 meters and then finished second in the discus with a throw of 47.06 meters. He currently ranks second in the UAA in the discus and 16th nationally while ranking tops in the UAA and 22nd nationally in the shot put.
