Poets and Quants Names Furlo and Benger as Best & Brighest Business Majors

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Seniors Allie Furlo of women’s soccer and Sam Benger of football have been honored by Poets and Quants as the Best & Brightest Business Majors in the Class of 2018.

Allie Furlo, a four year player for the women’s soccer team, was interested in business at an early age. The Wilton, Connecticut, native started her first business when she was seven, marketing her own comic books and painting her classmates’ nails. Furlo is quoted in the article stating, “My enterprise hit regulatory hurdles when my teacher saw me giving a classmate change for a $20 bill in the hallway.”

Sam Benger has accumulated many honors on the football field for the Tartans but his vision off it has set him apart from other business students. As a junior, Benger started a social entrepreneurship competition to address issues like “poverty, homelessness, and food shortage” in the Pittsburgh area.

Benger is quoted in the article saying, “This event started as an idea I had when I was riding the bus home after class one day. Six weeks later I had put together a diverse panel of expert judges, secured funding and guarantees from firms in the incubator space to help the winning team form a real product or service. The goal was to create tangible impact by adjusting the standard business case competition structure and applying it to community issues in Pittsburgh. It was a wonderful learning experience for me and validated that acting on a vision with initiative can be not only gratifying, but impactful on a larger scale.”
