Student-Athletes Excel in Classroom Once Again

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Eight programs competed in the NCAA Championships for the year, including four during the spring semester, all while Carnegie Mellon University student-athletes were excelling in the classroom and impacting the university and Pittsburgh community. For the spring, 81 student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) with more than 50 percent earning a 3.50 GPA or better.

Sixteen varsity athletic programs achieved a 3.30 or better with the females recording a 3.48 average GPA and the males a 3.36 average. The 12-member women’s golf team led the way with a 3.61 GPA, as the men’s basketball team collected the best team GPA amongst men’s teams with a 3.59 GPA.

The men’s track and field team, which sent six members to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and three to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships secured a 3.45 GPA for the spring semester with 10 4.0s, while the women’s team was just above them with a 3.46 GPA and seven 4.0s.

The women’s swimming and diving team finished 30th at the NCAA Championships and collected a 3.52 GPA this semester and a 3.39 for the entire year. The men’s swimming and diving team earned its highest NCAA finish (16th) since 2010 and had a 3.36 GPA for the spring and a 3.41 GPA for the year. In all, eight women and six men achieved a 4.0 from the swimming and diving program.

On top of the semester success, 12 upperclassmen maintained cumulative GPA’s of 4.0. The success was widespread among the colleges, as 36 students with 4.0s were enrolled in the College of Engineering, 18 in Dietrich College, 16 in the Tepper School of Business, five in the Mellon College of Science, five in the School of Computer Science, and one in the interdisciplinary program from the School of Humanities and Arts.

Community highlights include the men's tennis team earning the ITA Regional Community Service Award for working together to clean up parks and neighborhoods, while planting trees in Squirrel Hill and hosting a series of tennis clinics for students, faculty and staff. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council also continued to mentor students at Lincoln Elementary School and hosted the 9th Annual Field Day, as the Plaidvocates hosted a barbeque in April to support the campaign to end sexual assault and relationship violence.
