Carnegie Mellon Athletics Earns Best-Ever Finish in Final Division III Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University Department of Athletics finished 15th in the 2021-22 Division III Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Carnegie Mellon totaled 725.75 points to record its highest finish in the 27-year history of the Learfield Directors’ Cup. Following the 2017-18 school year, Carnegie Mellon was 23rd. The Tartans are one of four University Athletic Association institutions to crack the top 15 in the standings.

“It was a remarkable year for our program and I couldn’t be prouder of our student-athletes, coaches and staff,” said Director of Athletics Josh Centor. “We are explicit about our goals to be one of the top Division III programs in the nation, and we took big strides toward those ambitions this year. With the opening of the Highmark Center just around the corner, it is an incredible time to be a Tartan.”

Carnegie Mellon received its points from scoring in 13 championships – four fall, four winter, and five spring. In the fall, the football team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in program history while the women’s soccer team advanced to the sectional round for the sixth time. The men’s cross country program turned in a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championship with the women’s team placing 18th. During the winter season, both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams placed at the NCAA Championship meet. The men finished 14th and the women placed 24th. The men’s indoor track and field team recorded its best finish in program history, as the Tartans finished sixth at the NCAA Championship while the women’s indoor track and field team also scored points at the NCAA Championship.

The women’s golf team recorded a fourth-place showing at the NCAA Championship this past spring with the men’s golf team ending the championship in sixth. The women’s tennis team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship with the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field team each had three All-America honors at the NCAA Championship meet. The men placed 21st and the women were 26th. Junior Samantha Giordani became the third female athlete in track and field program history to earn All-America status twice at the NCAA Championship event turning in a sixth- and eighth-place finish in the 200-and 100-meter dashes, respectively.

The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
