Tartans Entertain Grove City to Open 2011 Campaign Saturday

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University football team will kick off its 2011 season with a non conference matchup against the Grove City College Wolverines.  The game is slated for a 1:00 pm kickoff on Saturday, September 3rd at Gesling Stadium on Carnegie Mellon's campus.

Last year's matchup ended in a 28-21 victory for the Tartans, and it also came as the season opener.  Carnegie Mellon has had recent success against Grove City winning eight of the last ten meetings with the Wolverines.

The Tartans are once again led by head coach Rich Lackner, who is entering his 26th season at the helm, will look to continue a trend of success in the season openers.  Carnegie Mellon has won its opener in the last 12 years, and it is a tradition of success that no current player wants to be a part of breaking.

The Grove City game is a long time rivalry for Carnegie Mellon.  The Tartans have squared off on the gridiron with the Wolverines 52 times, and the Cardinal and Gray hold the all-time edge 32-18-2.  Only Washington & Jefferson College has met Carnegie Mellon more times than Grove City.

Lackner looks to lead Carnegie Mellon to another 1-0 start while the Tartans' football program sits just five wins from the 500 win landmark.

The head man sat down earlier this week to discuss the 2011 season and what the team will need to do to defeat the Wolverines.
