The Carnegie Mellon University football program, under the direction of head coach Rich Lackner, announced the hiring of Andy Helms as offensive coordinator. Helms, a 1993 graduate of the Carnegie Mellon Tepper School of Business, will take over the play calling for longtime Tartan offensive coordinator Rich Erdelyi, who announced his retirement in November.

Three players on the Carnegie Mellon University football team were named to the 2013 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South All-Star Team. Senior defensive lineman Ryan Jok (Novi, Mich.) was selected to the first team while senior inside linebacker Eric Rolfes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Madeira) and sophomore cornerback Vince Demarchi (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) receive second-team accolades. All three were also named to the University Athletic Association (UAA) first team.

Carnegie Mellon University senior offensive guard Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio) and senior wide receiver Tim Kikta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) will be playing in two separate all-star games this weekend. Cheek will play in the fifth annual D-III Senior Classic Football All-Star game in Salem, Va. on Friday, December 13 while Kikta will take the field on Saturday, December 14 in the American (Aztec) Bowl All-Star Game played in Mexico City.

Senior defensive lineman Ryan Jok (Novi, Mich.) of the Carnegie Mellon University football team was named a Capital One Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Tuesday, December 3. Jok was selected to the first team after being selected as an All-District candidate the past two seasons.

Of the 16 selected, nine Tartans are making a repeat appearance on the All-UAA team with six marking the third time they were honored.

Senior quarterback Rob Kalkstein (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) on the offensive side and senior punter Tucker Smith (Fairhaven, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) on special teams were honored.

Senior quarterback Rob Kalkstein (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) of the Carnegie Mellon University football team set the school’s career passing yard mark as the Tartans hosted University Athletic Association (UAA) foe Case Western Reserve University in the 28th Annual Academic Bowl on Saturday, November 16. Despite Kalkstein’s career-high 327 yards passing and three touchdowns, The Tartans dropped a 35-32 decision. The senior signal caller ends his career with 5,519 yards passing.

The Tartans take on Case Western Reserve University in 28th Annual Academic Bowl in the final University Athletic Association (UAA) matchup. The Tartans enter Saturday’s contest with a 3-6 overall record and a 0-2 mark in UAA play while Case is 4-4, 1-1. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. on the turf of Gesling Stadium.

The Carnegie Mellon University football team had five members named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Capital One Academic All-District Team Thursday, November 7. This marked the eighth straight year the Tartans have had at least five named to the All-District team. To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve and maintain a GPA of 3.3 or better.
