(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University football team will open its 2014 season on Saturday, September 6 as it travels to Cleveland, Ohio for a 7:00 p.m. kick against Case Western Reserve University in the 29th Annual Academic Bowl and 2014 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Kickoff Classic at DiSanto Field.

When the Tartans and Spartans collide on the gridiron Saturday night, it will mark the first meeting for both as affiliate members of the PAC.  The game will count towards both the PAC and University Athletic Association (UAA) standings.

The Academic Bowl is an annual football game between two of the nation's top academic institutions that began in the fall of 1986. The winner is awarded the Academic Bowl trophy. The Academic Bowl is more than a trophy, as it emphasizes a "Commitment to Academic and Athletic Excellence." The Spartans won the first Academic Bowl Trophy in 1986, defeating Carnegie Mellon 21-14. In the all-time Academic Bowl series, the Tartans hold a 15-13 advantage over Case and also lead the all-time series 26-17.  Their first-ever meeting was in 1970, as the Tartans defeated Case 21-0.  Last season Case defeated Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, 35-32.

The Tartans are once again led by head coach Rich Lackner, who is entering his 29th season at the helm and currently ranks fifth among Division III active coaches with 184 victories.
