14 Carnegie Mellon Athletes Named to the 12th Annual UAA Presidents Council Scholar-Athlete Team

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - Carnegie Mellon University had 14 student-athletes named to the 12th Annual University Athletic Association (UAA) Presidents Council Scholar-Athlete Team, as announced be the league’s office on Wednesday. The 14 Tartans, three men’s cross country, two football, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, men’s tennis and one women’s tennis, received the prestigious honor along with 142 other student-athletes representing all eight UAA member institutions.

The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced the names on the 2021 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. Carnegie Mellon University linebacker Ken Murawski (1982) was listed on the division ballot for consideration.

The Carnegie Mellon University football team had seven student-athletes named to the 2020 National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers. An impressive 1,432 players from 364 schools qualified for membership in the society's 14th year.

Head Coach Rich Lackner of the Carnegie Mellon University football team has announced the captains for the 2020 season. The four rising seniors, running back Luke Bikulege (Greer, S.C./St. Joseph's Catholic), offensive linemen Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran), inside linebacker Mason Tolliver (Sylmar, Calif./Crespi) and outside linebacker Danny Zahniser (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) were voted captains by the Tartan football program.

Carnegie Mellon University football senior Anthony Kennon (Lancaster, Mass./Nashoba Regional) has been selected to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for excelling academically and athletically while showing leadership and commitment to the community. Each sports season there are 21 scholarships available for men and 21 scholarships available for women across all three NCAA divisions.

Football Hires Ben Gibboney as Defensive Coordinator

Ben Gibboney has been named the defensive coordinator for the Carnegie Mellon University football program, and will begin his role next month. Gibboney, who has been part of the Tartans’ staff as the defensive backs coach since 2015, replaces longtime Tartan defensive coordinator Terry Bodnar, who announced his retirement in November after 36 years with the program. Bodnar spent 34 years as defensive coordinator.

The Carnegie Mellon University football team landed 51 members on the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Academic Honor Roll for the Fall 2019 semester. For the sixth consecutive fall, the Tartans had the most football players honored amongst the 11 schools that sponsor football in the PAC. Of the 51, 19 maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA during the first semester.

It was a memorable fall for the Carnegie Mellon Athletics Program, as five of six fall teams advanced to postseason play, the basketball and swimming and diving teams got off to great starts, and the women’s golf team earned a number one national ranking. Four teams competed in the NCAA postseason, including the women’s soccer team’s run to the national semifinals, and the Tartans once again finished the fall 16th in the Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings. On top of the competitive success, 104 student-athletes achieved 4.0 grade-point averages (GPA) and more than 60 percent of the student-athletes earned a 3.50 GPA or better.

Senior defensive end Michael Lohmeier (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and sophomore placekicker Brandon Nguyen (Maitland, Fla./Lake Highland Preparatory) of the Carnegie Mellon University football team were named to the D3football.com 2019 All-South Region team. Both land a spot on the third-team, as they were selected in balloting by South Region sports information directors and D3football.com staff. This marks the sixth straight season the Tartans have had at least one player receive the accolade.

The 2019 National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame's 62nd Annual Awards Dinner, where Carnegie Mellon University senior defensive end Michael Lohmeier (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) will be recognized as a NFF Scholar-Athlete, will be streamed live on ESPN3 available everywhere via the ESPN app. The decorated event, which has one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports, will be held Tuesday, December 10 at the New York Hilton Midtown in downtown New York City with the live stream beginning at 8:30 p.m.

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Sean Knight (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) was recognized nationally on the D3football.com Team of the Week and also was named Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Defensive Athlete of the Week. Knight garners the honors following his play Saturday in the Tartans’ 24-21 win over previously undefeated and 20th-ranked Case Western Reserve University in the 34th Annual Academic Bowl on Saturday.
