Carmelo R. Montalvo enters his ninth season on the Carnegie Mellon staff and his eighth as the defensive line coach. Montalvo joined the Tartan staff at the start of the 2015 season as a graduate apprentice, assisting with the linebackers, quality control, and other game planning activities.
 
In each year of his tenure as defensive line coach, Montalvo has had athletes earn both All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) and All-University Athletic Association (UAA) recognition, including Brian Khoury, the school’s all-time leader in sacks (29.5). During the 2016 season, Khoury was named UAA Defensive Player of the Year. That same season, Khoury earned All-PAC First Team Defense honors, leading the Tartans with 12.5 sacks.

In 2019, Montalvo coached Michael Lohmeier who was a D3football.com All-South Region honoree after he led the PAC with a school record 22.5 tackles for a loss. The William V. Campbell Trophy Finalist, regarded as the academic equivalent of the Heisman Trophy and given annually to the absolute football best scholar-athlete in the nation amongst all Divisions, ended the season ranked second nationally in total tackles for a loss.
 
Prior to his arrival at Carnegie Mellon, Montalvo coached two seasons at the Southern School of Energy and Sustainability in Durham, North Carolina. While at Southern Durham, Montalvo was promoted from linebackers coach to assistant defensive coordinator. During his tenure with Southern Durham, the Spartans won the 2013 High School 4AA State Football Championship and were State Quarterfinalists in 2014.
 
Montalvo graduated in May of 2013 from North Carolina Central University with a Bachelor of Science degree in pre-medicine. He received his master’s degree in healthcare policy and management at Carnegie Mellon’s Heinz College in May of 2017.
 
Montalvo and his wife, Melissa, reside in Brookline with their daughter Kadyn and son Mateo.
