Cordts Matches Career-High in Setback at Brandeis

(WALTHAM, Mass.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to Brandeis University on Sunday, February 9 and dropped an 87-62 decision in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. In the setback junior Seth Cordts (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) matched his career-high with 18 points while the Tartans are now 10-10, 3-6, as Brandeis improves to 11-9, 3-6.
    
Senior Sean Brophy's (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) three-pointer with 15:25 showing on the clock in the first half gave Carnegie Mellon an early 5-4 advantage, but the Judges heated up from there.  Brandeis scored the next 19 of 23 points to take a 23-9 lead with just under 10 minutes in the half to play.

With the Tartans trailing 30-16 at the 6:50 mark, they used a 14-2 run to climb back into the contest.  The scamper ended on a transition layup by freshman Jack Serbin (New Albany, Ohio) from sophomore Jason Sebak (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Prep) with three minutes to play in the half making the score 32-30 Brandeis.

The Judges closed the half scoring six of the last eight points to go into the break with a 38-32 lead.  Both teams shot 50% from the floor during the first twenty minutes of action with Tartan senior Rob Mohen (Stamford, Conn./Regis (NY)) leading all scorers with 10 points.

Brandeis started the second half on a 12-2 run before using a 15-3 run midway through the half to claim a 66-44 advantage with 10:15 on the clock.  Carnegie Mellon didn't go away, responding with nine straight points cutting the deficit to 66-53 with 8:32 to play.

The Judges then pushed the lead back to twenty at 77-57 with five minutes to play before holding on for the 87-62 victory.  Brandeis finished the game shooting 55.4% from the floor to the Tartans 40.0%. Cordts led the Tartans with his 18 points while Mohen was the only other Tartan to score in double figures with 15 points.  Seback tied a season-best with five assists in the setback.

Ben Bartoldus led the Judges with a game-high 19 points.  Robinson Vilmont and Derek Retos had 15 and 14, respectively.

Carnegie Mellon will continue UAA play on Friday, February 14 when they entertain Emory University at 8:00 p.m.
