Four Score in Double Figures as Tartans Close Season Against Case
(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The senior laden Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team ended its season on Saturday, March 1 with four players scoring in double figures in an 80-66 defeat to Case Western Reserve University at home in Skibo Gymnasium. The Tartans finish the year with an 11-14 overall mark and 4-10 record in University Athletic Association (UAA) play.
Senior Christian Manoli (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda) led the Tartans with 23 points and 10 rebounds, recording his second double-double of the season, as junior Seth Cordts (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) was second in scoring with 16 points.
The Tartans held an early 7-4 lead after a layup by senior Rob Mohen (Stamford, Conn./Regis (NYC)) but a three-pointer by Tim Chung, after the Spartans' second offensive board on the possession, tied the game at 7-7 just three minutes into action.
Another Mohen layup gave the lead back to the Tartans but that was their last of the game as Chung drained another trey which sparked a 10-0 run by the visitors who went ahead 17-9.
Senior Asad Meghani (Carrollton, Texas/Greenhill School) closed out his career by making a three-pointer in his 56th straight game when he put one through the net with 8:52 to go in the half to pull the Tartans within four at 22-18.
The momentum didn't swing, however, as the Spartans then scored 10 straight to go up 14 points and later led by 15 at the break, 43-28.
The Spartans shot 51.7% from the floor in the first stanza to the Tartans' 27.5%.
The Tartans won the second half 38-37 but could never find great rhythm offensively hitting just 33.3% from the floor, nearly 12% below their season average.
Meghani tallied 11 points and four assists for the game while Mohen had 10 points. Cordts also picked up a career-high five steals.
Case was led by Chung's 19 points while David Thompson poured in 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.
