Tartans Shoot Lights Out in Dominant Win Over Franciscan

(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team shot 61.5% from the floor in a 90-54 victory over Franciscan University at the first night of the Geneva College Coaches versus Cancer Tournament Friday, November 21. The win moves the Tartans record to 3-0 on the young season while the Barons are now 0-2.
Carnegie Mellon started the game with a 15-0 run over the first five minutes. During the stretch, the Tartans converted 6-of-8 from the floor while sophomore Jack Serbin (New Albany, Ohio) scored the first eight points and 10 during the run. The Cardinal and Gray never looked back and took a 50-23 lead into the break.
The Tartans shot 69.6% (16-23) from the floor in the first half and 70% (7-10) from long range. Franciscan shot 28.1% (9-32) while only making three long balls in the frame finishing 3-11 from behind the arc.
Early in the second half, Carnegie Mellon used a 10-0 scamper to grab its largest lead of the contest at 71-31 with 13 minutes to play. Sophomore Chris Shkil (Mentor, Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) started the run with a layup and finished it with a foul shot with three other Tartans scoring in-between.
Carnegie Mellon had 14 players that scored with three in double figures led by Serbin's game-high 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor, including a 4-of-5 effort from behind the arc. Senior Seth Cordts (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) and junior Kemal Dincer (Istanbul, Turkey/Texas Christian University) were the other Tartans in double figures with 11 points each. Shkil tied a career-high in leading the Tartans with a game-high six rebounds while contributing nine points.
It marked the first time that Carnegie Mellon shot over 60% from the floor in a contest since January, 6, 206 when the Tartans shot 65.5% in a win over Brandeis in Waltham, Mass.
The Tartans will return to the court Saturday at 1:00 p.m. as the play Pitt-Greensburg in the second day of the Geneva College Coaches versus Cancer Tournament.
