Tartans Lose to Case Western Reserve in UAA Opener

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted Case Western Reserve University to open University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Saturday, January 10. The Tartans dropped an 80-46 contest as they move to 9-3 overall and 0-1 in league play while the Spartans are now 10-2, 1-0.

Following a three-point basket by junior Jason Sebak (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Prep) that gave Carnegie Mellon the early 3-2 advantage, Jimmy Holman's jumper  1:20 into the contest gave Case Western Reserve a 4-3 lead and the Spartans never looked back.  Case Western Reserve took a 37-20 edge into the locker room and led by as many as 35 in the second half before going on for the victory.

Carnegie Mellon was held to a season-low field goal percentage, shooting 27.8% to Case Western Reserve's 43.8%.  For just the third time this season, the Tartans were outrebounded, as they hauled down 33 boards while the Spartans grabbed 55, including 19 offensive boards that turned into 16 points.

Nine Tartans scored in Saturday's game, as senior Seth Cordts (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) led the way with 15 points – his 10th double-digit contest of the season. Sophomore Jack Serbin (New Albany, Ohio) added seven points and junior Kemal Dincer (Istanbul, Turkey/Texas Christian University) finished with six.

Case Western Reserve was led by Eric Black's double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Black's 15 points led the Spartans off the bench, which accounted for 52 points. Holman ended the contest with 13 points and Julien Person tabbed 11.

The Tartans will continue UAA action on Friday, January 16 when Brandeis University visits Skibo Gymnasium at 8:00 p.m.
