Cordts and Serbin Named to the Capital One Academic All-America Men’s Basketball Squad
(AUSTIN, Texas) – For the first time in school history, two Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball players, senior Seth Cordts (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) and sophomore Jack Serbin (New Albany, Ohio), were named Capital One Academic All-Americans in the same year. As announced Tuesday, February 24 by Capital One and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Cordts was named to the second team while Serbin found a spot on the third team. The two also become the sixth and seventh players in program history to receive the prestigious honor.
Both were named to the Academic All-District 4 team in early February, allowing their names to be placed on the national ballot.
Cordts, a mechanical and biomedical engineering student, carries a 3.89 GPA. Cordts currently ranks second on the team and fifth in the University Athletic Association (UAA) in scoring with 17.4 points per game. The senior leads the Tartans in foul shooting, as he converts 78.6% from the line and earlier this season connected on 22 straight and currently has made 39 of his last 42. Cordts has scored in double figures in 20 of 24 games this season including pouring in a career-best 34 on two occasions; the first coming at Pitt-Johnstown to open the season and the second in a setback to nationally ranked New York University.
Cordts has been named an Andrew Carnegie Society Scholar, given to 40 seniors from Carnegie Mellon based on Academic Merit, Leadership, and Service, is a member of Pi Tau Sigma National Mechanical Engineering Honor Society, as well as a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court Academic Award honoree.
Serbin currently ranks first on the team and UAA in blocked shots, while ranking sixth nationally, averaging 2.9 blocked shots per contest. Earlier this season, he tabbed a career-best seven blocks in a win over Penn State Beaver and has recorded a block in all but two contests. This past weekend, the sophomore became Carnegie Mellon's single-season record holder for blocks. He now has 70 on the season. Serbin also leads the team in scoring and rebounding, as he is pouring in 17.7 points per game and hauling down 9.8 rebounds a game, ranking fourth and second in the UAA in each category. The sophomore has recorded the most double-doubles in the UAA with 13, which ranks 10th nationally. He has scored in double figures in 23 games and recorded 20 or more in seven.
In the classroom, Serbin carries a 3.86 GPA and is an economics major. He has made Dean's List with high honors every semester.
The Tartans will conclude their regular season on Saturday, February 28 when they travel to Cleveland, Ohio to play the Spartans of Case Western Reserve University at 5:00 p.m.
