Tartans Fall in DoubleTree Invitational Championship to Trine, 62-47

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team dropped its first contest of the season when Trine University defeated the Tartans, 62-47, in the championship game of the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Invitational. The Tartans are now 4-1 on the season while Trine holds an identical overall record.

Trine started the game with an 8-0 run, as the Tartans missed their first six shots. The Thunder pushed their lead to 17-5 before junior Jack Serbin (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) and junior Chris Shkil (Mentor, Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) combined for the Tartans next 19 points and tied the game at 24-24 with 2:40 to play in the half. Serbin started the come back with a three-pointer and scored 12 of the 19 points.

Trine's Jared Holmquist stopped the Tartans' run with a layup and despite two more jumpers by Serbin, the Thunder led by five at the break.

The Tartans' momentum was halted by halftime as their shooting woes returned to start the second half. Only eight points was scored by the home squad during the first 12 minutes of the period as another layup by Holmquist gave the Thunder a 54-37 lead.

Trine went on to the 62-47 victory as the Tartans shot a season-low 30.8% from the field.

Serbin led the Tartans with 18 points, seven rebounds and four blocks and was named to the all-tournament team. Trine was led by Holmquist's 23 points and Will Dixon's 21 points.
