Four Tartans Score in Double Figures in Setback to Emory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team dropped a 93-77 University Athletic Association (UAA) contest to the visiting Eagles of Emory University on Sunday, January 22. Four Tartans scored in double figures, as Carnegie Mellon moves to 9-7, 3-2 while Emory is now 12-4, 3-2.  

Carnegie Mellon shot 39.7% from the floor to the Eagles 53.8% while Emory converted 10-of-23 from behind the arc. For the second straight game and third time this season, Carnegie Mellon was outrebounded, as Emory grabbed 39 boards to the Tartans 37.

Senior Jack Serbin (New Albany, Ohio) led the Cardinal and Gray with 21 points and tabbed his 10th double-double of the season with a game-high 14 rebounds. The senior also dished out five assists. Senior Chris Shkil (Mentor, Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) scored 15 while freshman Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) tallied a career-best 13 off the bench. Junior Ryan Maha (West Mifflin, Pa.) finished the game with 11 points.

Emory had five starters score in double figures led by Christopher Avant's game-high 26 points. Avant also grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds for the Eagles. Adam Gigax scored 16 points, Beau Bommarito had 13, Jim Gordan chipped in with 12 and Whit Rapp scored 11. Rapp also handed out 13 assists in the win for the Eagles.

The Eagles started the game scoring the first seven points and saw the lead grow to 33-18 with six minutes to play in the half. Carnegie Mellon then used a 10-2 run, thanks to back-to-back three-point baskets from freshman Cooper Williams (Meriden, N.H./Kimball Union Academy), which made the score 35-27 with 3:26 to play in the half. Emory closed the half scoring six of the last eight points and took a 41-29 lead into the break.

Emory started the second half on an 18-8 run over the first five minutes of play and led 59-37. The visitors continued to control the game and led by as many as 23 with 6:02 to play. Over the last five minutes of the contest, Carnegie Mellon outscored the Eagles 16-10, with Serbin accounting for 10 of the Tartans points.
 
Carnegie Mellon will continue its four-game home stand on Friday, January 27 when the Bears of Washington University in St. Louis travel to Pittsburgh. Tip is set for 8:00 p.m.
