Men’s Basketball Led Wire-to-Wire in 89-80 Win Over Chicago

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted the University of Chicago in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday, January 29 and never trailed in an 89-80 victory. The win moves the Tartans record to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in UAA play while the Maroons are now 11-7 and 3-4.

Carnegie Mellon shot 54.2% from the floor while Chicago shot 47.5%. It marked the third time this season the Tartans shot above 50%, winning all three. The program has won 51 of the last 62 contests when shooting better than 50% from the floor.

Four Tartans reached double figures in scoring with senior Jack Serbin (New Albany, Ohio) leading the way with 22 points. Serbin led all rebounders with 11 boards to record his league leading 11th double-double. Junior Ryan Maha (West Mifflin, Pa.) poured in 20 points and converted 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Sophomore Seth Henry (Fulton, Md./Reservoir) and freshman Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) each contributed with 12 points. Henry tabbed his second double-double of the season after hauling down 10 boards.

Jake Fenlon led the Maroons with a game-high 30 points. The junior converted 10-of-21 from behind the arc in the setback. Noah Karras scored 17, Waller Perez had 13 and Blaine Crawford finished with 11 for Chicag.

Carnegie Mellon opened the game shooting 10-of-15 from the floor and built a 25-9 lead following a triple by Serbin with 11 minutes to play. The Tartans maintained the double digit lead the remained of the half and led 47-32 at the break.

The Tartans opened the second frame with two quick baskets and led 51-32 29 seconds in, but Chicago scored 14 unanswered as the lead shrunk to 51-46 at the 16-minute mark. A traditional three-point play by Crawford eight minutes later pulled the Maroons to within a basket at 64-62, but the Tartans responded with a 10 straight points to push the lead back to double figures. During the run, Maha accounted for seven points. Carnegie Mellon never saw its lead drop below eight points the rest of the way.  

Carnegie Mellon will travel to St. Louis on Friday, February 3 to play the eighth-ranked Bears of Washington University. Tip is slated for 8:00 p.m. CT.
