(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted Bethany College on Tuesday evening and junior Patrick Ehland's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) foul shot with 4.6 seconds remaining lifted the Tartans to a 59-58 victory. Carnegie Mellon evens its record at 1-1 while the Bison are now 0-4 to start the season.
Carnegie Mellon went on a 21-7 run over an eight-minute stretch to tie the score at 58-58 with 1:22 remaining in the game. Both teams traded empty possessions and a runner by Bethany's Calique Jones with seven seconds remaining rimmed out. A foul on the rebound sent Ehland to the free-throw line with 4.6 seconds left, where he converted the front-end, but the Tartans were then charged with a lane-violation that kept the score at 59-58. Bethany had one last chance, as Jones' potential game-winning shot drew iron as time expired.
Carnegie Mellon had three players score in double figures with sophomore Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) leading the way with 15 points. Senior Ryan Maha (West Mifflin, Pa.) chipped in with 11 and sophomore Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) ended with 10 points. Ehland finished the night one point shy of his third career double-double, as he led the Cardinal and Gray on the boards with 10 rebounds, tying a career-high.
The Tartans led 16-10 with nine minutes to play in the first half following a layup by freshman Daniel Weiss (Marlboro, N.J.). The Bison then closed the half on an 18-8 run to take a 28-24 lead into the locker room.
During the run, Chaice Truex scored nine of his 14 points. Truex also grabbed 11 rebounds on the night to record the double-double. Bethany was led by Jones with a game-high 20 points. Liam Davis also grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Tartans will host the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Invitational on Saturday, November 25, with a game against Chatham University at 3:00 p.m. while Baruch College will play the University of Mary Washington at 1:00 p.m. in the first day of play.
