Three Score Career-Highs as Tartans Fall at Brockport

(BROCKPORT, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to The College at Brockport and dropped a 94-93 contest. In the setback, junior Patrick Ehland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and sophomores David Huber (Hampton, Pa./Vermont Academy) and Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) each tabbed career-highs with 20, 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Tartans are now 4-7 as they enter University Athletic Association (UAA) play while Brockport moves to 8-3.

Carnegie Mellon shot 44.9% from the floor while the Golden Eagles shot 54.7% from the floor including connecting on 13-of-22 from behind the arc. The Tartans were led by Ehland's 20 points, as the junior converted 7-of-10 from the floor, followed by Huber's 12. Junior Seth Henry (Fulton, Md./Reservoir) and sophomore Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) joined Suddeth with 10 points each for the Tartans. Henry tabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to record his third straight double-double.

The Golden Eagles also had five score in double figures with Hamed Shamseldin leading the way with a game-best 22 points. Dwayne Daniel had 17 points, Tyler Collins knocked in 15, Justin Summers tabbed 12 and Michael O'Hara ended with 10 points. Summers hauled in 11 rebounds to lead Brockport.

Brockport started the game with a hot hand connecting on seven of its first nine shots from the floor and went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe to take a 22-15 lead eight minutes into play. Carnegie Mellon responded with a 12-3 run over the next four minutes and took its first lead following a pair of free throws by Ehland.

The home team answered with five straight points, but the Tartans then scored eight unanswered and held the lead the rest of the half before taking a 48-43 advantage into the locker room. Huber started the run by connecting on back-to-back treys and ended the first stanza a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the arc. Carnegie Mellon grabbed its largest lead (46-38) of the first half when McNeil completed his second traditional three-point play with 1:41 to play.

Brockport started the second half on a 14-4 run over the first three minutes and claimed a 57-52 lead and never trailed the rest of the game. During the run, the Golden Eagles converted 5-of-6 from the floor including 3-of-4 from long range. The Tartans knotted the score at 69-69 midway through the second half following a three-point bucket by freshman Daniel Weiss (Marlboro, N.J.), but Brockport scored 11 straight points over the next four minutes to push its lead to 80-69. A triple by Carnegie Mellon senior Ryan Maha (West Mifflin, Pa.) made the score 90-83 with 31 seconds remaining, but the Golden Eagles connected on four three throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.

Carnegie Mellon will open UAA play on Saturday, January 6 when they travel to Cleveland, Ohio. Tip against the Spartans of Case Western Reserve University is at 4:00 p.m.
