Howarth Tabs 17 as Men’s Basketball Falls 68-56 at Rochester

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team played the University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon and lost a 68-56 contest in Rochester, New York, in a University Athletic Association (UAA). Carnegie Mellon moves to 4-10 and 0-3 in association play, as Rochester is now 11-3, 2-1.

Sophomore Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) led the Tartans with a game-high 17 points. Classmate Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) chipped in with nine points and added three assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Sophomore Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) led the Cardinal and Gray with eight rebounds.

Rochester's Michael Mangan had 15 points in the win for the Yellowjackets. Patrick Benka was the only other Yellowjacket to record double figures, as he ended with 13.

At the 10:34 mark of the first half a three-point basket by senior Ryan Maha (West Mifflin, Pa.) cut the Tartans deficit to 14-10. Over the next eight minutes, Rochester used a 17-5 run to expand its lead to 31-15, the Yellowjackets largest of the half, before taking a 35-20 lead into the locker room.

Rochester came out in the second half and continued to maintain control of the contest and took its largest lead of the game with 4:17 to play at 64-45. After shooting 28.6% (8-28) from the floor in the first half, the Tartans shot 34.5% (10-29) in the second half and finished the game shooting 31.6%. Rochester shot 34.3% for the game from the floor.

The Tartans will return home on Friday, January 19 and will host the University of Chicago. Tip is set for 8:00 p.m. on the hardwood of Skibo Gymnasium.
