Tartans Fall on Road Trip to NYU

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team visited New York University on Friday, January 26 for a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest, falling 83-65 to the Violets at the Hunter College Sportsplex. The Tartans are now 4-13 overall and 0-6 in the UAA, while the Violets move to 9-7 and 2-4.

The Tartans were led by sophomore Zach Howarth's (Freehold, N.J. / St. John Vianney) 19 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla. / Trinity Prep) scored 13 points with sophomore Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) putting in 11 points and dishing out four assists.

New York pushed its first-half lead to 11 points, 23-12, after Jule Brown converted a jumper and free throw with 11:28 on the clock. The Tartans would climb back to trail by two at 2:27 to go in the first half on a driving layup by senior Thomas Cook (Baltimore, Md. / Carver Arts & Tech.). Freshman Zach Watson (Dublin, Ohio / Jerome) also put the deficit at two with a reverse layup with 22 seconds to go but a shot close to the buzzer by NYU made the score 41-37 at the break.

Suddeth scored the first two baskets of the second half to fuel a 10-3 run that put the Tartans up 47-44 after McNeil put in a layup and Howarth sank four straight free throws.

The Violets would quickly take back the lead after Jimmy Martinelli scored on a layup and hit the team's first of seven three-pointers during an 11:29 stretch that put the Violets up 19.

The Violets would finish with eight three-pointers for the second half and shot 54.8 percent from the field for the game, while the Tartans converted 41.9 percent from the field and hit just 4-of-20 from behind the arc.

The Tartans will next face Brandeis University (10-6, 2-4) on Sunday, January 28 in Waltham, Massachusetts, at 12:00 p.m.
