(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team entertained the Violets of New York University on Friday, February 2 and dropped a 71-59 decision in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The loss moves Carnegie Mellon's record to 4-15 and 0-8 in UAA play while NYU is now 10-8, 3-5.
Sophomore Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) recorded his first career double-double after handing out a career-best 10 assists and scoring 10 points for the Tartans. The sophomore added six rebounds, as the Tartans edged the Violets 35-34 on the boards. Junior Patrick Ehland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) led the Tartans with 14 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) chipped in with 10 points in the setback
Four Violets scored in double figures with Dom Cristiano and Ethan Feldman each having 13 points while Jimmy Martinelli and Cameron Moore both added 10 in the win for NYU.
The first half was a game of runs. The Tartans started the game on a 9-2 run following a layup by sophomore Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) three minutes into play. NYU responded with a 14-1 run over the next five minutes to take a 16-10 advantage. Over the next four minutes, the Cardinal and Gray used a 12-2 run to retake the lead at 22-18 with 7:32 to play in the half following a pair of free throws by Suddeth. The Violets once again answered and seven straight points before taking a 31-28 lead into the break.
Carnegie Mellon started the second half on an 11-4 run and led 39-35 with 15:15 left on the clock. During the run, four different Tartans scored with Ehland leading the way with four points. With the score tied at 45-45 two minutes later, NYU ignited with a 17-6 run over a span of nine minutes and led 62-51 with four minutes to play. The visitor's then maintained control of the contest and went on for the 71-59 victory.
Carnegie Mellon will return to the hardwood on Sunday, February 4 when the Judges of Brandeis University travel to Pittsburgh. Tip is set for 12:00 p.m.
