Men’s Basketball Earns Team Academic Honors by NABC for Seventh Straight Season; Five Individuals Honored

The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team was recognized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) when the committee on academics announced the annual Team Academic Excellence Awards for 2018-19. In the seventh year of the program, the Tartans are one of 12 institutions from Division I, II, III, NAIA and NJCAA that have been recognized each of the seven years.

Carnegie Mellon University senior Seth Henry (Fulton, Md./Reservoir) was honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) on Friday afternoon as an honorable mention selection on the 2019 Division III Men's Basketball All-ECAC Team. The senior received the award after earning first team accolades from the University Athletic Association (UAA) following the season.

Carnegie Mellon University head men's basketball coach Tony Wingen has dedicated his career to growing men’s basketball in NCAA Division III over the last three decades. Wingen will receive the Division III Outstanding Service Award on Friday, April 5, from the National Association of Basketball Coaches at the Division III coaches meeting during the annual NABC Convention and NCAA Division I Men’s Final Four in Minneapolis.

Senior Seth Henry (Fulton, Md./Reservoir) and junior Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) of the Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team were named to the All-University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Basketball Team when the Association announced its postseason accolades on Thursday. Henry was named to the first team while Howarth found a spot on the second team. This marks Howarth’s second All-UAA honor, as he also appeared on the second team a year ago.

A 12-0 run in overtime propelled the Carnegie Mellon University men’s basketball team to a season-ending 97-91 win at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, February 23. The Spartans forced overtime with a last second three-pointer but couldn’t stop the Tartans in OT as the Cardinal and Gray finish the year at 11-14 overall and 6-8 in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

Carnegie Mellon University junior Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Google Cloud Academic All-District Men's Basketball Team. Howarth is one of five players, and lone junior, on the District 4 team. To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve and maintain a GPA of 3.3 or better.

The Carnegie Mellon University men’s basketball team dropped an 89-74 University Athletic Association (UAA) game to the visiting Eagles of Emory University Sunday afternoon. Carnegie Mellon moves to 10-14 overall and has a mark of 5-8 in UAA play. Emory is now 19-5 and tied atop the UAA with a 10-3 mark.

The Tartans are now 10-13 and 5-7 in UAA play while the Yellowjackets move to 19-4 and 9-3, as Rochester remains in a tie for the top spot in the UAA.

The University Athletic Association (UAA) win moves the Tartans record to 9-11 overall and 4-5 in the UAA. The Maroons, who were tied for the top spot in the UAA heading into play Sunday afternoon, are now 13-7 and 6-3.

The setback moves the Tartans record to 8-11, 3-5 UAA while WashU is now 13-6, 6-2.
