Men’s Basketball Drops Tough Battle at Brandeis

(WALTHAM, Mass.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team continued University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Friday night with a 72-68 tough loss at Brandeis University. The Tartans move to 9-12 overall and 4-6 in UAA play while the Judges are now 12-9, 5-5.

Senior Seth Henry (Fulton, Md./Reservoir) paced the Tartans with 16 points. Junior Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) chipped in with 12 points while junior Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) and sophomore Zach Watson (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) each had 11. Henry, Howarth and Suddeth all ended with seven rebounds. Junior Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) finished with seven points, six rebounds and dished out six assists.

Chandler Jones led Brandeis with 16 points. Corey Sherman ended with 15 while Eric D'Aguanno and Layte Workman both had 14.

Carnegie Mellon took its first lead of the half with 3:17 remaining at 35-34 on a traditional three-point play by McNeil. On the Judges ensuing possession, the home to retook the lead the lead on a pair of foul shots by Jones. The Tartans then closed the half scoring the final four points including a put-back by sophomore Ethan Miller (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) as the horn sounded, which gave the visitors a 40-36 lead at the break.

Brandeis tied the score at 49-49 with 14:34 to play on a long ball by Sherman. The Tartans then held the Judges without a point over the next four minutes and used a 7-0 run to take a 56-49 lead. Brandeis cut the score to 56-55 at the 8:39 mark, but once again the Tartans answered scoring six straight and pushed the lead to 62-55 with seven minutes to play.

Three minutes later, the home team used an 8-0 and took a 66-64 lead, its first since the first half. The score was tied on two more occasions before Workman hit a pair of free throws with 1:12 to play to make the score 70-68. Carnegie Mellon didn't score the rest of the way and another pair of foul shots with 8.3 seconds left on the clock by the Judges sealed the win.

Carnegie Mellon next travels to New York for an 11:00 a.m. contest against the Violets of NYU on Sunday, February 10.
