Six Tartans Score in Double Figures in 87-84 Win Over Bethany

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted the Bison of Bethany College on Wednesday night and tied a school record with six players scoring in double figures in an 87-84 win. Carnegie Mellon moves to 1-2 while Bethany is now 0-5.

Carnegie Mellon ended the game shooting 54.1% (33-61) from the floor, including a 62.1% (18-269) effort in the first half. Bethany finished the game shooting 50.0% (30-60) from the field. The last time six Tartans scored in double figures was a 99-83 win over Lycoming College December 6, 2005.

Junior Joey Krempa (Linden, N.J.) led the Tartans with a career-best 20 points off the bench, as he converted 7-of-8 from the floor, while converting 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Senior Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) poured in 15 points, juniors Ethan Miller (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) and Daniel Weiss (Marlboro, N.J.) each added 13 while senior Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) and freshman Nick Nakasian (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) both ended with 10 points apiece. Senior Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) handed out 12 assists.

Bethany wa sled by Dalton Hamrick's 24 points. Neshawn Brown and Dylan Furglong added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

The Tartans jumped out to a 31-19 lead midway through the first half to see the Bison use an 11-2 run over a three-minute stretch to cut the lead to 33-30 with 6:59 to play in the half. Back-to-back triples by Weiss and Krempa pushed the Tartans lead to 39-30, but Bethany then knotted the score at 45-45 with 2:33 to play in the half. Carnegie Mellon scored the next six points while Bethany's Aiden Albert drained a half court shoot at the buzzer to leave the score 51-48 Tartans at the break.

Carnegie Mellon scored the first 11 points of the second and led by as many as 21 (82-61) with 7:33 to play following a fast break layup by Suddeth. With the Tartans leading 86-71 with 3:23 to play in the contest, Bethany scored 13 unanswered points over the next three minutes to make the score 86-84. Howarth then connected on the front end of a pair of foul shots with second bouncing off the rim to Bethany's Albert with 9.7 seconds remaining. The Bison then moved the ball up the court and got the rock back in the hands of Albert for a contested game-tying three from the corner that hit the rim and fell short.

Carnegie Mellon returns to the court on Saturday, November 23 with a 4:00 p.m. tip at Marymount University.
