Tartans Lead Wire-to-Wire in 86-64 Win Over Chatham

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted Chatham University on Saturday afternoon on the hardwood of Skibo Gymnasium and defeated the Cougars 86-64. The win marks the seventh straight for Carnegie Mellon and pushes its record to 7-2 while Chatham is now 7-4.

Carnegie Mellon shot 49.3% (36-73) from the floor, as the Tartans held Chatham to shooting 24.4% (19-78). Carnegie Mellon dominated the inside game with 50 points in the paint to the Cougars 16 while out rebounding Chatham with a season-high 54 rebounds to the Cougars 47.

Senior Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) scored a season-high 24 points to lead four Tartans in double figures. Junior Ethan Miller (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) scored 15 points with junior Joey Krempa (Linden, N.J.) scoring 14 off the bench. Senior Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) recorded his second double-double of the season and fifth of his career with 13 points and a season-best 13 rebounds. Senior Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) finished with nine assists in the win and now needs nine more to move into second on the programs all-time list.

Chatham's Malik Potter led all scorers with 26 points while Marcos Cintron finished with 12. Potter also led the Cougars with nine rebounds.

Carnegie Mellon opened the game on a 9-1 run and held Chatham to four made four field goals over the first 15 minutes of play to lead 34-14, the largest of the half. The Tartans then took a 42-27 lead into the locker room.

The Cardinal and Gray started the second half on a 15-2 run and never looked back. During the stretch, Miller and Suddeth accounted for the first 13 points. The largest lead of the game for Carnegie Mellon came with 13:13 to play when Howarth connected on a pair of foul shots.

The Tartans will be off until December 31 when they travel to North Canton, Ohio to play Division II Walsh University. Tip is set for 1:00 p.m.at the Cecchini Center.
