Tartans End 2019 with 92-72 Loss at Division II Walsh University

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to North Canton, Ohio on Tuesday afternoon to play Division II Walsh University. The Cavaliers won 92-72, as Carnegie Mellon is now 7-3 overall while Walsh moves to 10-2.

For the fifth time this season, Carnegie Mellon shot 50% from the floor. The Tartans converted 28-of-53 (52.8%) from the field, but the Cavaliers made 35-of-66 (53.0%), including connecting on 16-of-28 from behind the arc for 57.1%. Carnegie Mellon shot 43.5% from long range on 10-of-23.

Seniors Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) and Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) led the Tartans with 17 points and five rebounds each. The 17 points marked a season-best for McNeil who also handed out four assists along with senior Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney). Junior Daniel Weiss (Marlboro, N.J.) ended the game with 11 points.

Five Cavaliers scored in double figures led by JT Shumate with 21 points. Mark Mokros scored 18, Christian Montague had 16, Darryl Straughter had 15 and Sterling Christy finished with 10. Shumate led all players with nine rebounds.

Walsh started the game scoring the first seven points over a four-minute span and extended the lead to 13-4 a minute later. With the Cavaliers leading 21-9 at the 12:50 mark, Weiss started a 10-2 run for the Tartans with back-to-back triples which cut the deficit 23-19 midway through the first half. Walsh answered with a 12-2 run over the next four minutes and led by as many as 17 on two different occasions before taking a 52-39 lead into the locker room.

Junior Joey Krempa (Linden, N.J.) cut the Tartans deficit to single digits with a three-pointer at the 14-minute mark of the second half which made the score 61-53. The Cavaliers responded with a 15-2 run over the next six minutes and never looked back, as they went on for the 92-72 victory.

Carnegie Mellon returns to the hardwood on Monday, January 6 with a 4:00 p.m. tip at Drew University.
