Tartans Sweep Season Series After 84-73 Win at Chicago

(CHICAGO, Ill.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to Chicago on Friday night and swept the season series with an 84-73 win over the Maroons of the University of Chicago in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. Carnegie Mellon is now 10-11 overall and 3-7 in the UAA. Chicago moves to 9-12, 4-6.

Senior Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) moved into 10th on the school's all-time scoring list after tabbing 20 points. He now has 1,196 career points. Senior Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) recorded his UAA leading 10th double-double of the season with 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) and junior Daniel Weiss (Marlboro, N.J.) both ended with nine points while McNeil handed out six assists in the win.

Carnegie Mellon shot 52.7% from the field and converted 9-of-18 from long range. Chicago shot 44.8% from the field and was 6-of-27 from behind the arc. The Maroons were led by Cole Schmitz and Brandon Beckman with 18 points apiece. Dominic Laravie finished with 12 points and Bryce Hopkins ended with 10.

With the Tartans leading 8-7 four minutes into play, Carnegie Mellon used a 9-1 run over a four-minute span to take a 17-8 advantage. The run ballooned into an 18-3 scamper following three straight three-pointers from the Tartans to push the lead to 26-10 with 10:22 to play in the first half.

Chicago pulled within 10 points at 30-20 when Hopkins connected on back-to-back triples, but the Tartans responded scoring the next eight points and then took a 44-29 lead into the locker room. The Tartans shot 53.1% from the floor in the first half and connected on 6-of-12 from long range while the Maroons shot 38.7% and converted 4-of-15 from behind the arc.

The Maroons scored the first four points of the second half, but once again the Tartans answered with eight straight points and led 52-33 with 17:35 left in regulation. Midway through the half, Chicago used a 9-1 run and cut into the Tartans, which then expanded to 19-5, as Chicago made the score 66-62 with 7:31 to play.

A traditional three-point play by Howarth gave the visitor's a 71-62 edge with the clock showing 6:35. Chicago never pulled closer than five points the rest of the game, as Carnegie Mellon went on for the 84-73 win after converting all four of its foul shots in the last minute of play.

The Tartans return to the hardwood on Sunday, February 16 with a 12:00 pm CT tip at 16th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis.
