Tartans Win Second Straight Game

Tartans Top Pitt-Greensburg, 94-76

(GREENSBURG, Pa.) – A day after hosting Pitt-Greensburg, the Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to Greensburg, Pennsylvania, for a rematch against the Bobcats. The Tartans high-powered offense again outlasted the Bobcats winning 94-76.

For the second consecutive game, Carnegie Mellon shot over 50.0% from the floor as the Cardinal and Gray shot 57.4% on Sunday afternoon. Pitt-Greensburg finished the game shooting 42.0%. The Tartans success from the foul line also continued with the team converting 19-of-23 for 82.6%. The Tartans held a 39-30 edge on the glass while sophomore Nick Nakasian (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) led all players with eight boards. As a team, the Tartans assisted on 28 of 35 made baskets with sophomore Sean Oberman (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) leading the way by dishing out six.

Freshman R.J. Holmes (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson) led five Tartans in double figures with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-14 from the floor. Sophomore Kevin Sax (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge) had 18 points after he shot 8-of-9 from the floor. Sax also handed out five assist and recorded five block shots. Oberman and classmate Josh Berry (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) chipped in with 16 and 12 points, respectively, while junior Charlie Tripp (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mariemont) ended with 11 points.

The Tartans trailed 40-33 after the first twenty minutes of play before outscoring the Bobcats 61-36 in the second half. Carnegie Mellon used an 11-3 run over a four-minute span in the second half to take its first lead, 50-49, of the frame with 12:52 to play following a pair of made free throws by Berry. Three minutes later with the score tied at 57-57, the Tartans put together a 15-4 run and then maintained the lead the rest of the way.

Carnegie Mellon will be back in action on Friday, March 26 with a 5:00 p.m. tip at Hiram College.
