Oberman Sinks Seven Triples in Tartans 93-80 Win at Hiram

(HIRAM, Ohio) – Sophomore Sean Oberman (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) scored a career-high 26 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor, while connecting on all seven triples taken to lead the Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team to a 93-80 victory at Hiram College Friday evening. Oberman's seven three-point baskets made was the most in a single-game for the Tartans since A.J. Straub made a school record eight at Skidmore on December 9, 2005.

The Tartans high-power offense shot 57.3% from the floor while converting 11-of-16 (68.8%) from behind the arc. The Terriers shot 46.4% and were held to a 4-of-19 (19%) effort from long range. The Tartans held the slight edge on the glass grabbing 35 rebounds to Hiram's 33.

Behind Oberman's 26 points, three other Tartans scored in double figures. Sophomore Nick Nakasian (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) finished with 14 points, senior Zach Watson (Dublin, Ohio / Jerome) chipped in with 13 and sophomore Josh Berry (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) tallied a career-best 11 in the win. Berry also recorded career highs with five rebounds and five assists. Freshman R.J. Holmes (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson) and sophomore Kevin Sax (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge) both recorded career-best eight points with Holmes leading all rebounders with nine.

With 4:52 remaining in the first half, Carnegie Mellon grabbed its first lead of the contest, 30-28, on a made jumper by senior Joey Krempa (Linden, N.J./Linden) following a layup by Nakasian that knotted the score. The two buckets sparked a 15-7 run to end the first frame, as the Tartans went into the break with a 41-35 advantage.

Hiram used a 10-0 run during a two-minute stretch in the second half with the home team taking a 56-49 lead with 14:29 to play. A little over a minute later, the Tartans started a 10-2 run which gave them a 65-61 edge at the midway point of the second half. The Cardinal and Gray held the lead the rest of the way and led by as many as 15, 92-77, with 2:05 to play on yet another Nakasian layup.

Carnegie Mellon will be back in action on Sunday, March 28 when Hiram travels to Pittsburgh for a 1:00 p.m. tip on the hardwood of Skibo Gymnasium.
