Five Score in Double Figures in Tartans 17-point Win

(FREDERICK, Md.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team evened its record at 1-1 with an 86-69 victory against Wilson College on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Hood College MMI Tip Off. Junior Kevin Sax (Highlands Ranch, Colo. / Thunder Ridge) and freshman Aidan Murphy (Glen Ellyn, Ill. / Glenbard West) both recorded career-highs in points with 17 apiece.

Junior Sean Oberman's (Flemington, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) third three-pointer of the game gave the Tartans a 20-14 lead with 13:59 to go in the first half. It was the third six-point lead of the game for the Tartans but the Phoenix answered with six straight to tie the game at 20-20 with 12:11 to go.

A 20-5 run by the Tartans over the next 5:49 gave the Cardinal and Gray their largest lead of the half and closed with a three-pointer by Murphy, his third of five for the game.

The Phoenix pulled back into the game and trailed by just two with 34 seconds to play in the half before the Tartans held a 44-40 halftime advantage.

The Tartans opened the second half with an 11-4 run to once again lead by double-digits. Sax scored five of his points during the run. The Tartans pushed that 11-point lead to 18 points with a 7-0 run closing on another three-pointer, this one by senior Charlie Tripp (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mariemont), with 12:41 to go in the game.

The lead for the Tartans didn't go below 10 and reached as high as 20 on a free throw by sophomore R.J. Holmes (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson) with 1:25 to play.

Five Tartans scored in double figures with Sax and Murphy leading with 17. Junior Nick Nakasian (Powell, Ohio / Olentangy Liberty) scored 13 while Oberman and Holmes each finished with 11 points. Holmes led the team in rebounds with a career-best nine while Nakasian and junior Josh Berry (Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) each had a career-best five assists.

The Tartans will next play on Wednesday, November 10 at La Roche University at 7:00 p.m.
