Tartans Fall to NYU on Senior Day

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted New York University for a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Sunday, February 13. The Tartans had a tough shooting day and fell to the Violets, 77-51, to move to 11-9 overall with four games left on the schedule.

For the first time this season the Tartans shot under 30 percent from the floor, making just 16-of-67 attempts for a 23.9% showing. Sophomore Jack Stone (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) led the team for the second straight night with 20 points for his 10th game in double digits.

NYU shot 50.0% from the floor and made 11 three-pointers to score 77 points for the third straight game and have now won two straight in the UAA.

Nearly half the first period passed before the Tartans hit their third shot of the game, a three-pointer by senior Charlie Tripp (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mariemont) which made the score 19-7. The next trip down court, Stone connected on a three-pointer to make it 19-10. Two minutes later it was 24-15 after a layup and a second three-pointer by Stone before a five-minute scoring drought for the Tartans led to a 31-15 advantage for the Violets.

The Violets hit back-to-back triples to end the half and led 39-22 at the break.

The Tartans missed their leading scorer, sophomore R.J. Holmes (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson) who was out with an injury. Holmes, who averages 16.6 points per game, scored 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the last meeting when the Tartans won 84-80.

The second half continued on the same trend with the Violets shooting 48.1% from the floor to the Tartans 22.9%.

Junior Kevin Sax (Highlands Ranch, Colo. / Thunder Ridge) was the only other Tartan to reach double figures as he scored 12 points and also pulled down 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Tripp finished with seven points.

The Tartans will next travel to the University of Rochester for a 5:30 p.m. game on Friday, February 18.
