Tartans Stumble at Rochester

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team continued University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Friday with a road contest in Rochester, New York against the Yellowjackets of the University of Rochester. The Tartans dropped a 69-46 contest and are now 11-10 overall and 4-7 in the UAA while the Yellowjackets move to 15-7 and 7-5.

The 46 points for the Tartans marked a season-low and for the second straight game the team shot under 30 percent from the floor, converting 15-of-60 for a 25.0% showing. Rochester shot 48.2% and dominated the paint as it outscored Carnegie Mellon 46-14 downlow.

Junior Sean Oberman (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) recorded his 11th game scoring in double figures with a team-high 10 points. Sophomore R.J. Holmes (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai Stevenson) tied a career-high with four blocks.

Senior Charlie Tripp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont) gave the Tartans a 20-19 with 8:17 to play in the first half on a triple which ended up being the visitors last field goal of the half. Rochester outscored the Cardinal and Gray 15-4 the remainder of the frame, including scoring 11 straight, and took a 34-24 lead into the locker room.

The first half saw the Tartans shoot 23.1% from the floor while the Yellowjackets shot 43.8%. Over the final 8:17 of the half, Carnegie went 0-for-12 from the floor with Rochester converting 6-of-14.

Oberman made the score 38-30 Yellowjackets two minutes into the second half on a three-point buckets. Rochester then used a 12-2 run over a four-minute stretch to extend its lead to 50-32. The Tartans used a 7-1 run midway through the second half which made the score 54-42, but that was as close as the score got.

The Tartans will head to Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, February 20 to play the 18th-ranked Eagles of Emory University. Tip is set for 12:00 p.m.
