Tartans Strong Second Half Not Enough in 91-85 Setback to #22 Heidelberg

(WOOSTER, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team competed in the opening round of the E.M. "Mose" Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Classic hosted by Wooster College and dropped a 91-85 contest to 22nd-ranked Heidelberg University.

How it Happened

  • A triple by junior Jack Stone at the 10:51 mark of the first half made the score 24-18 in favor of Heidelberg. The Student Princes then scores seven straight to take their first double digit lead of the contest at 31-18 with nine minutes to play in the half.
  • The Tartans then connected on back-to-back treys with the first coming from freshman Buckley DeJardin and the second by classmate Justin Allen to cut the deficit under double figures at 31-24.
  • A minute later, Heidelberg pushed its lead back to double digits following nine straight points and then closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 56-39 lead into the break.
  • With the score 74-51 in favor of the Student Princes, the Tartans rattled off nine straight point over a two-minute stretch to cut the lead to 74-60 with 11:30 to play.
  • Four minutes later the Tartans made the score 81-70 on a traditional three-point play by senior Sean Oberman.
  • After a made basket by Heidelberg, the Cardinal and Gray score eight straight and made the score 83-78 with 3:27 to play. The Tartans run expanded to 13-2 after a long ball by junior R.J. Holmes with 1:58 on the clock to make the score 85-83.
  • The scored remained the same until 27 seconds left when Student Princes Isaiah Young connected on a pair of foul shots and then nine ticks later Eric Panning connected on another pair to push the score to 89-83.

Tartan Stats

  • Carnegie Mellon shot 49.3% (36-73) from the floor.
  • Four players scored in double figures with Holmes leading the way with a season-high 22 points. Stone scored 19 with Oberman and senior Nick Nakasian each scoring 10.
  • The Tartans hauled down 41 rebounds with Nakasian leading with a season-best 10 to record a double-double. The senior also tied his career-best dishing out five assists.

Student Princes Stats

  • Heidelberg ended the game shooting 47.1% (32-68).
  • Six players scored in double including all five starters. Panning led the way with 15 points. Seth Hohman and Ty Watkins each had 14, Young had 13, Emmanuel Perdue 10 with Jashun Cibb also recording 10 coming off the bench.
  • Panning led the Student Princes with 11 rebounds to record a double-double while Watkins handed out six assists.

Game Notes

  • It mark Nakasian's first double-double this season and third of his career.
  • The Tartans outrebounded their ninth opponent this season in eight contests holding a 41-31 advantage over the Student Princes.
  • The Tartans are now 3-1 this season when shooting the rock 45% or better.
