Tartans Knockoff #22 WashU 71-58

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team continued University Athletic Association play on Sunday with a 71-58 victory to the 22nd-ranked Bears of Washington University in St. Louis.

How it Happened

• WashU grabbed an early 7-2 lead three minutes into the contest and then was held without a field goal for eight minutes, as the Tartans scored 16 straight to make the score 18-7.
• The Bears cut the deficit to six points on two different occasions, but the Cardinal and Gray closed the first half on a 9-2 run and led 35-22 at the break.
• The second half started with two triples by the home team to extend the lead to 41-22, the largest advantage of the contest for the Tartans.
• WashU responded with a 10-2 run and trailed 43-32 with 13:35 remaining in the game.
• With the Tartans leading 54-43 four minutes later, the Bears used a 14-4 run over a span of four minutes and 35 seconds to pull within a point at 58-57 with 5:04 to play.
• Carnegie Mellon's defense kicked in and allowed the Bears to score one-point the rest of the way, as the home team closed play on a 13-1 spurt.

• Carnegie Mellon continued its hot hand at the foul line converting 17-of-20 for 85.0%.
• Freshman Justin Allen led four Tartans in double figures with 21 points, 19 coming in the second half. The freshman recorded a season-best four triples as he went 4-of-6 from long range.
• Junior Jack Stone also connected on 4-of-6 from behind the arc and ended with 18 points.
• Junior R.J. Holmes recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds while senior Nick Nakasian scored 10 points,
• Senior Josh Berry finished with a career-high five steals.

Bears Stats

• Yogi Oliff led a pair of Bears in double figures with 14 points.
• Hayden Doyle finished with 13 points.

Game Notes

• Carnegie Mellon is 9-1 when holding its opponents to 73 points or less this season.
• Holmes double-double is his fourth this season and 13th for his career.
• The Tartans have two wins against top 25 ranked opponents this season.
