Bio

Tony Wingen enters his 34th season with the Tartans and is the longest tenured men’s coach in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

On February 3, 2006, Wingen became Carnegie Mellon’s all-time leader in wins when the Tartans defeated Washington University 79-72. He currently has 361 wins as the university’s head coach.

During Wingen’s 33-year helm of the Tartans, he has had five players play professional basketball during his coaching career at Carnegie Mellon and six overall. Kevin Byrne ’96, Eliot Goren ’05, Nate Maurer ’06, Greg Gonzalez ’08, and Christian Manoli ’14 were the five Tartans under Wingen to play professionally. Bary Dunn, an ’06 graduate, also competed internationally, as he was part of the United States Inaugural Maccabi Australia International Games that competed in Sydney, Australia in 2006. Matthew Pettit and Shane Rife, both 2011 graduates, continued their playing career as well. Pettit played for the BK Miners club team in Norway and Rife played for the Glasnevin Basketball club team in Ireland.

Wingen has coached 13 players who have scored 1,000 or more career points at Carnegie Mellon and 12 University Athletic Association (UAA) first-team honorees, including Nate Maurer who was a two-time honoree on the top team and named UAA Player of the Year following the 2005-06 season.

Wingen has served Carnegie Mellon in a number of administrative roles, most recently as Associate Athletics Director until 2017. Wingen, who grew up in Enfield, Conn., now resides in Mt. Lebanon with his wife, Kris. They have three children and five grandchildren.
