Qian Continues to Lead Tartans at Jekyll Island Invitational

(JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team competed at the second day of the 2014 Jekyll Island Invitational Saturday, March 15.  The Tartans are currently in 16th place after 36-holes of play with a two-round total of 605 (303-302). The three-day event is being played on the 6,700-yard, par-72 Pine Lakes Course on Jekyll Island.

For the second straight day, freshman George Qian (Bettendorf, Iowa/Montverde Academy) carded a career-low round to lead to Tartans.  The freshman fired a one-under-par 71 for a two-round total of 143 and is tied for 10th individually.

The other four Tartans in the field, senior Ian Bangor (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy), sophomore Ben DuCarme (McMurray, Pa./Canon-McMillan), junior Cameron Low (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) and freshman Ryan Karbowicz (Avon, Conn.) all shot five-over 77 Saturday afternoon. After 36-holes of play, Bangor has carded a 153 followed by DuCarme with a 154, Low a 155 and Karbowicz a 157.

In a field of 30 teams which includes seven of the nation's top 10 teams, Illinois Wesleyan leads the field with a 582 while host Oglethorpe University is one-stroke back.

Three individuals for Carnegie Mellon continued play Saturday on the Oleander Course. Freshman Alex Woodward (Aurora, Ontario) has a two-round score of 153 (73-80), junior Justin Fischler (Avon, Conn.) has cared a 157 (79-78) while junior Derek Cobb (Urbana, Ohio) shot an 81 on Saturday for a 36-hole total of 166.

The Tartans will conclude the 54-hole invitational Sunday morning and will be teeing off at 8:00 a.m.
