Golf Team Leads Division III in Classroom For 2013-14 Season

(NORMAN, Okla.) – The Carnegie Mellon University golf team was awarded top academic honors for Division III when the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced its winners for the 2013-14 academic year presented by Farmers Insurance. The Tartans finished the year with a cumulative grade point average of 3.70, as five players turned in 4.0's.  This marks the second time the Tartans have claimed the top honor for Division III, as they placed first with a 3.62 GPA in 2009-10.

"It is quite an achievement to have the highest team GPA in the nation. I am so proud of our men's golfers and the commitment they have made to excellence in their academic and athletic lives," said Director of Athletics Josh Centor. "Carnegie Mellon is a world-renowned university and the success our golfers have had across a wide range of intense disciplines speaks volumes about their dedication and effort."

DePaul (Division I), Ferris State (Division II), SCAD Atlanta (NAIA), Dodge City (NJCAA DI) and Walters State (NJCAA DII), along with Carnegie Mellon, were named Academic National Champions for their respective divisions as announced by the GCAA. Dodge City posted the highest overall team GPA for all divisions with a 3.82. A total of 141 teams submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher to earn All-Academic Team recognition.

Besides Carnegie Mellon, 19 other programs received President's Special Recognition status for earning team GPAs of 3.50 or better. There were 20 teams that earned this distinction, which matches the previous best set last season.

To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors, a college or university must submit the grade points earned and hours attempted for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.
