Qian Wins Playoff at UAA Championships, Team Takes Second

(SORRENTO, Fla.) - Sophomore George Qian (Bettendorf, Iowa/Montverde Academy) sank a putt to force a playoff at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Golf Championships on Monday, March 9, and finished as the individual medalist with a victory on the first playoff hole at Red Tail Country Club in Sorrento, Florida, to lead the Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team to a second-place finish with a score of 616. The University of Rochester won the event with a two-day total of 611.

Qian, who had a one-stroke lead heading into day two of the championships, played another round of 74 and forced a playoff against the University of Rochester's Dominick Schumacher with a par putt on the 18th hole.

Qian went on to par the first playoff hole as Schumacher bogied the 406-yard par 4, to become the first Tartan to win individual medalist honors since 2009.

Sophomore Alexander Pomerantz (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional), who played as an individual for the tournament, recorded a career-best round of 74 and finished with a two-day total of 152 to place third overall and earn All-UAA first-team honors.

Senior Cameron Low (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward), freshman Adrian Del Bosque (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academy) and senior Justin Fischler (Avon, Conn./Avon) all earned All-UAA second-team honors with their finishes. Low finished ninth overall with a two-day total of 154 after his second 77 of the tournament on Monday. Del Bosque followed his first round 81 with a day-two score of 76 to finish tied for 11th place with Fischler who also played the course with an 81 and a 76.

Sophomore Jordan Klodowski (Kittanning, Pa./Kittanning) bettered his first-round score by three strokes, carding a 78, for a two-day total of 159 and a 14th-place showing.

Also playing in the tournament was sophomore Brad Jennette (Pittsford, N.Y./Sutherland) and freshman Nikhil Mohan (Bangalore, India/Canadian International School). Jennette carded a 75 on Monday and finished tied for 15th with a total of 160, as Mohan closed the day with an 83 and two-day total of 162 for 19th place out of 30 golfers.

The Tartans will next compete at the three-day Jekyll Island Invitational at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Jekyll Island, Georgia, beginning Friday, March 13.
