Three Men’s Golfers Named PING Mid-Atlantic All-Region

(NORMAN, Okla.) – Three Carnegie Mellon University men's golfers have been recognized for their play on the course his past season by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Juniors George Qian (Bettendorf, Iowa/Montverde Academy) and Brad Jennette (Pittsford, N.Y./Sutherland) along with sophomore Nikhil Mohan (Bangalore, India/Canadian International School) were named to the 2016 PING Mid-Atlantic Region team.  The honor comes days after all three were named to the All-University Athletic Association (UAA) team.

This marks Qian's third straight season receiving all-region honors while Jennette and Mohan receive their first honor. It also marks the second straight season as well as the second time in program history that three earned the distinction in the same season.

The three helped lead the Tartans to three team victories in the Tartans' final four tournaments of the spring.  The stretch started with an 11-stroke victory at the 15-team Hershey Cup followed with a win at two home events, Carnegie Mellon Spring Invitational and at the Edward Jones Shootout.  Carnegie Mellon ended the season with a second place showing at the Fred Kravetz Invitational hosted by the University of Rochester.

The trio also played a factor in the team setting two school records this past season. The first came at the Jekyll Island Collegiate when the Tartans' broke the lowest three-round score with an 888 and then the Cardinal and Gray carded a 282 at the Edward Jones Shootout to set a new single-round team score.

Qian, a first-team All-UAA member, won both of his matches during the UAA match play championship in March, topping Keenan Hickton of Emory 5-and-4 before knocking off NYU's Lucas Oberholtzer 4-and-2.  The junior finished the season with a team-best average round of 75.6 through 19 rounds with a tournament win, three top-three finishes and five top-ten finishes. Qian recorded a season-low round of four-under par 68 during the final round of the TaylorMade-adidas Intercollegiate and was named Division III Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men's Golfer of the Month for March.

Jennette, a second-team All-UAA member, finished second on the team with an average of 76.4 in 17 rounds of play.  The junior won two events and recorded five top-ten finishes. Jennette recorded a career-best round of even par 70 at the Edward Jones Shootout in April.

Mohan, All-UAA honorable mention, turned in three top-ten finishes and averaged a 77.3 competing in all 19 rounds this season.  The sophomore tied a career-best with an even par 72 on the final day of the 54-hole Jekyll Island Collegiate.
