Qian, Mohan and Del Bosque Receive GCAA Honors, Rodgers Named Finalist for National Coach of the Year

(NORMAN, Okla.) – The Carnegie Mellon University golf team had three members honored by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) at its annual awards dinner on Tuesday, May 16 in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida. In addition, first-year head coach Dan Rodgers was named as one of five NCAA Division III finalists for the Dave Williams Award presented by Golf Pride Grips.

Senior George Qian (Bettendorf, Iowa/Montverde Academy) and junior Adrian Del Bosque (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academy) were named Cleveland/Srixon All-America Scholars while junior Nikhil Mohan (Bangalore, India/Canadian International School) joined Qian on the PING Mid-Atlantic Region team. This marks Qian's second straight season to receive the All-America Scholar honor and fourth straight season receiving all-region honors while Mohan received the honor for the second straight season. It also marks the fifth straight season Carnegie Mellon has had a golfer named a scholar.

Already this season, Qian was named to his third straight College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District At-Large team. He claimed University Athletic Association (UAA) Most Valuable Player honors at the 2017 UAA Match-Play Championships after winning both of his matches and garnered his second straight first-team All-UAA honor.

Qian, who has a grade-point average of 3.85, finished the season with a team-best average round of 74.2 through 25 rounds with a tournament win, three top-three finishes and five top-ten finishes. At the Wynlakes Intercollegiate in late March, Qian tied the single-round school record with his opening-round score of five-under par 67. He finished the Wynlakes with a two-round score of seven-under par 137, which broke the school record for the lowest 36-hole event. The senior finished 30th out of 215 at the NCAA Division III Championships last week.

Del Bosque averaged a 78.7 through 23 rounds this past season and holds a 3.26 grade-point average. At the Kenyon BSN Fall Invitational, the junior posted a season-best round of one-under par 71. He is tied with Qian for the lowest single round score of 67 in program history.

Mohan recorded two tournament medalist honors this season and ranked second on the team with a scoring average of 75.9 competing in 23 rounds.  The junior was named to the UAA Championship All-Tournament team after winning both of his matches and garnered first-team All-UAA honors at the beginning of the month. Mohan carded a career-best round of two-under par 70 on two occasions this season. The first came at the third round of the BSN Fall Invitational hosted by Kenyon College and the second at the opening round of the Wynlakes Intercollegiate.

After beginning the season on an interim basis, Rodgers was appointed full-time head coach in December. He led the Tartans to their second ever NCAA Championships appearance and first since 2009. They claimed three tournament titles and were runner-up at three additional events. Carnegie Mellon only placed outside the top six once in 11 events this past season. The Williams Award and regional coach of the year recipients will be announced June 5.

To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically and compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 79.0 in Division III and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
