Tartans in Third After 36 Holes of Gordin Collegiate Classic

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team, ranked 11th nationally, competed in the opening day of the two-day, 54-hole Gordin Collegiate Classic on Monday and currently are in third place out of 13 teams. The event is being played at par 72, 7,098-yard, Columbus Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. With 36 holes being played on Monday, the Tartans carded rounds of 289 and 290 for a 579.

Hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University since 1991, the Gordin Collegiate Classic annually matches 12 of the best NCAA Division III teams, featuring most ­ if not all ­ of the top 10 finishers from the previous spring's NCAA Division III championship tournament.

Illinois Wesleyan, ranked tied for fifth nationally, leads the field with a 563 (285-278) while Emory University, who is ranked as the nation's top team, sits two strokes ahead of the Tartans after firing a 577 (286-291).

Sophomore Jason Li (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) opened play with a two-under par 70 before entering the clubhouse with a one-under par 71 for round two. The sophomore is currently tied for fourth individually in a field of 70 golfers with a 141.

Sophomore Jason Folker (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) turned in a career-low round during the second 18 holes on Monday with a four-under par 68. Folker carded a 74 to open play and is currently tied for eighth with a 142.

Freshman Joshua Lim (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) shot a 147 after firing rounds of even par 72 and 75. Freshman William Knauth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) opend play with a 73 and then shot a 76 during the second round and has a 149. Sophomore Jay Milch (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) finished play Monday with a 157 after carding rounds of 76 and 81.

The final round is set to start with tee times at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
